EIS Documentation / Public Participation and Scoping

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is part of the federal permitting process and is required to analyze the environmental impacts of a proposed action, mitigation for those impacts, and the participation of interested parties, through the public scoping process.

The public scoping process is the initial step in the preparation of an EIS. This process is designed to identify the scope of actions being considered, including alternatives, and the range of possible environmental impacts.

As a part of the scoping process, formal meetings are held to provide the opportunity for Federal, state and local agencies as well as the interested public to provide comments on the proposed actions.

During the meeting, participants will provide input regarding the proposed project, including identification of any conditions, studies, plans, or other considerations that may be relevant to the proposed activity from members of the community and regulatory agencies.

Information provided in response to the scoping meeting and noticing process is carefully considered in establishing the scope of the Environmental Impact Statement and are made a part of the administrative record.
